LOUSY LAWMAKER OF THE DAY:
South Carolina governor Nikki Haley recently vetoed half a million dollars allocated to domestic violence and sexual assault prevention. According to Haley’s “logic,”
“…these special add-on lines distract from the [Department of Health and Environmental Control’s] broader mission of protecting South Carolina’s public health.”
Ah, yes. How can we expect to protect public health when we’re too busy protecting public health?
Governor Haley’s veto implies that sexual and domestic violence are in a category outside the realm of “real” public health, further marginalizing those impacted by instances of abuse. Swell.
